Wood carving and the local language are distinctive of Val Gardena
Val Gardena's wood carvings are world-famous and the people’s trilingualism (Ladin, Italian and German) much admired.
Val Gardena was once part of a territory called Ladinia. Ladin is a Rhaeto-Romance language still spoken today. It is a blend of Latin of the first Roman conquerors and Celtic (Rhaetian), which was then in use.
The most famous art in Val Gardena is wood-carving; both sacral and profane works are produced. Some of the finest showpieces of traditional and modern wood-carving art made by local artists are displayed at the Galaria Unika, www.unika.org and the ART52 exhibition, www.art52.it.
The Gherdeina Local Heritage Museum shows valuable collections that take you on a journey of the natural and cultural history of Val Gardena. The centrepiece of the museum is the unique collection of ancient wooden toys of the valley. For more information visit. www.museumgherdeina.it
